Lyon coach Gerard Houllier says it was his side's self-belief and team spirit that enabled them to fight back for a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid that ensured them top spot in Champions League Group F on Wednesday.
"At the start of the Champions League campaign I had no idea we'd reach the Bernabeu unbeaten," Houllier said .
"But I think my team has grown in mental and physical strength with each game. They are mentally strong no matter what happens and always help each other out.
"After we fell behind we pushed forward in search of a goal. We took a lot of risks, but this team enjoys playing and wants to win every game.
"I have to admit though that we were lucky to have come across a Real Madrid without Ronaldo and Raul. If Lyon played without (John) Carew and Fred we'd have problems too."
Lyon fell behind four minutes before the break when Real midfielder Guti snapped home from close range after a David Beckham free kick.
But the French champions fought back hard in the second half and John Carew grabbed a deserved equaliser with an ingenious back-heel 18 minutes from time.
Real Madrid, who were dealt a humbling 3-0 defeat by arch-rivals Barcelona on Saturday, gave a much improved performance in the first half, but faded in the second and the team was jeered off the pitch at the Bernabeu for the second game in succession.
The most hostile treatment was reserved for coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo when he decided to replace Beckham with defender Michel Salgado 10 minutes from time. But the Brazilian said that although he was hurt by the way he had been treated, the fans did not appreciate why he had made the change.
"The people just didn't understand. Beckham was holding his back and was in pain. What do the people want me to do? Do they want him to die on the pitch before I change him?
"Yes, he was our best player with his long raking passes and crosses, but he couldn't take any more because of his back and that's why I took him off."
Luxemburgo said that despite the pressure from the fans and the Spanish media he was confident he could turn the team around.
"Of course I can continue as coach. I'm not thinking about whether the president will keep me on. My only worry is to work hard and recover the players that have been injured." |
