UK NEWS AND TEST
2007-08-04 13:32:08 来源:未知 |
BAD WEEK FOR: • People wearing hoods in the UK; for some time now many shops have banned customers who wear hoods (known as "hoodies") as this has been linked to hooliganism. The supermarket Tesco has for some time had a zero-tolerance policy against "hoodies". However, a 58-year-old woman was surprised when a Tesco security guard ordered her to remove her hood before entering the supermarket.
A 37-year old woman from Oklahoma, USA; after an argument with her boyfriend it seems that the man bit off her nose! "We looked around and tried to find a nose but couldn’t find it," said a police spokesman. "I think he swallowed it". • An 82-year-old German man, who drove down the motorway the wrong way! The man ignored 10 police cars and flashing lights for over 65km. The man eventually stopped when police formed a road block. • Gangs of teenagers, with the introduction of a new gadget specifically targeted at younger trouble-makers. The "Sonic Teenager Deterrent" emits a violent high-pitched noise that can be heard only by the under-20s. Nick-named the mosquito, it produces a sound described as like a giant demented insect forcing the recipients to clutch their ears and run. People over the age of 20 however cannot hear the noise. • A homeless man from USA, who has been arrested for trying to steal a sheep from his local zoo. A security guard at the zoo called police after spotting a man carrying a trash can with a sheep in it. The man gave an excuse to the police that he was a doctor and the sheep was sick. • A teacher in USA, who is the target of protests by animal rights activists. Apparently the teacher castrated a live pig in front of her high school class. Activists allege that one student vomited after observing the procedure and others were extremely upset. • A 7-year-old girl, who married a stray dog as part of a ritual to ward off the "evil eye" on her and her family in eastern India. Friends and family participated in three days of traditional ceremonies and festivities. GOOD WEEK FOR: • A blind 62-year-old great-grandmother from California, who has given birth to a baby boy, becoming one of the oldest women in the world to do so. The woman, whose eldest child is 40, also has 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. • A nine-year-old cat in China, who has managed to get an 81cm waistline and has grown to a weight of 15kg! According to its proud owner the giant cat eats 3kg of chicken and pork a day. The cat needs to be carried from one place to the next! New York, after news that city officials have decided to design their own branded condom, featuring images of famous landmarks such as the Empire State Building. The city’s health department gives away one million condoms each month. • Strange love matches, after a pig paired up with an antelope at the Los Angeles Zoo. The couple nap and cuddle together _ even nuzzling snout to nose. "It’s adorable. Wherever that antelope is, the pig is usually nearby," a zoo spokesman said. • A woman in Spain, who has given birth to a 15-pound (6.80kg) baby, the largest in 40 years in Madrid’s maternity hospital. The new baby’s father said that with another woman he had a daughter that weighed 17 pounds at birth. • Internet users in the financial district of London, known as the "city". The "city" will become the biggest wireless zone in Europe. 350,000 people who work in the "city" will be able to access the internet on the streets and in open places (if they have WiFi-enabled laptops or phones). • An "armed and dangerous" gang, which stole £40 million from a security depot in England. The gang posed as police, snatched the manager of the depot, took his wife and young son hostage. Police say that this could be the biggest robbery of cash ever in the UK. STATISTICS OF THE WEEK: • The average number of television sets in a British household is 4.7. • Nearly 60% of British men aged 20-24 years were still living with their parents last year, compared with 38% of women.
