foreign students in Australia

Here’s a report from the Townsville Bulleting in Northern Australia that describes one institution’s view of the situation. JAMES Cook University is scrambling to understand a sudden cooling off in the number of overseas students enrolling in courses at the university.
The decline in growth could mean the twin cities may miss out on a slice of $40 million the students spend here each year. JCU Vice-Chancellor Bernard Moulden said fierce competition to gain the student dollar worldwide had left many Australian universities with flagging numbers of international students. He said the university may be forced to drop its course fees to attract overseas students. The university said each international student spent $36,000 on food, accommodation and entertainment per year. This equates to up to $15 million and a potential total of $40 million, including education, being injected into the local economy. This year 1300 overseas students from 98 countries have enrolled at JCU. The bulk of those are from Singapore and China with 33 per cent from the US. The most popular courses include Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Business, Psychology and Bachelor of Science degrees which include marine science and astronomy. Professor Moulden said there had been up to a 10 per cent increase in enrolments from the students until this year when it had a nominal increase of just 1 per cent. "This is the first year in the past five years we have not seen growth so it is something we need to look into," he said. "The kind of thing that can affect it is whether Australia has become more expensive. "Canada and the UK are obvious competitors." IDP Australia, a university-owned firm that sells education overseas, said overall demand remained steady across the country. IDP Australia chief executive officer Anthony Pollack said Australia’s near $6 billion international student market was not growing as spectacularly as in previous years. But he said the long-term view was very different. In March 85,968 international students began studies across Australia, an increase from 2004 of 3000 students. "Results for schools were down by 10 per cent, further depressing the sector’s overall growth," Mr Pollack said. "English-language training was sluggish, with only about 250 more students commencing than the previous year. "Given that both senior secondary schools and language schools are key pathways to later university studies, these results may have implications for future years and are worth watching, but not as a real cause for concern." Mr Pollack said long-term trends were what counted but added that it was important to diversify and improve the education package to international students.
