EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE TO ASIAN STUDENTS ON CAMPUSES AFFECTED BY HURRICAN KATRINA
Next week, IIE, with funding from the Freeman Foundation, will be launching a program to provide emergency assistance to international students fromEast and Southeast Asia who are studying at colleges and universities in the Gulf Coast region of the US. International student advisors will be asked to nominate students who have been displaced or otherwise directly affected by the hurricane in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, and who need funds to replace housing, books, clothing, etc. Details including application procedures will be posted on the IIE.org website and the IIENetwork.org websites and will be sent to advisors through this IIE.Interactive email announcement next week.
This program is funded by loan repayments made by recipients of the ASIA-HELP program, an emergency loan program established in 1998 for Asian students in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis. ASIA-HELP was funded by The Freeman Foundation whose major objectives include strengthening the bonds of friendship between the United States and countries of East Asia.
IIE is currently seeking ways to assist international students from other regions of the world whose lives and study plans have been severely affected by Hurricane Katrina.
